Life is filled with awkward moments, like the ONE time you ask a woman when she is due because there is not a minute chance she is not pregnant and she is actually not pregnant. It happens to the best of us, and it’s not the only awkward moment happening in life. There are plenty of them. But sometimes awkward moments are more awkward for some than for others. Imagine being in a serious relationship with someone and then breaking up with them because you no longer want to be together, but then having to see one another every single day at work. It happens all the time in the workplace. Now imagine being in a workplace environment that forces you to make out with your now ex on a regular basis. It happens all the time in Hollywood, and it’s just awkward and uncomfortable for everyone involved. Especially when we are all watching and understanding that these people probably really cannot stand one another in real life.
So that led us to wonder which celebrity couples were onscreen loves and off-screen loves that eventually broke up off-screen and still had to work together for a long time. Some of them might surprise you and others might not. Some of these couples were so perfect it broke our hearts when things did not work out for them in real life or in television.
Blake Lively and Penn Badgley
The famous Serena Van der Woodsen dated the poor boy from a less upscale neighborhood, who would eventually go on to become her stepbrother on television for a good three years. The couple broke up out of what felt like nowhere to the rest of the world and still filmed together for another two years. There was rumor, of course, of strife on set, but it appears that the two were able to continue working together quite nicely for some time after they broke up. She’s now married to actor Ryan Reynolds, and the two just welcomed their first child. It would seem that there is no animosity between the two exes, but she’s so private and he doesn’t make it a habit to go out of his way in the press either, so chances are good we will never know if it’s true or not. This was one of those relationships that formed on the set and then fizzled when things were progressing, and it seems that they did an okay job of keeping their private lives private while they continued to film the show and their characters continued their back and forth behavior with one another.
Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder
They seemed so much like the perfect couple, and the world went crazy when they were finally able to start making out in real life on television, too. These two managed to stay together and totally gorgeous for more than three years before suddenly breaking up. There have been rumors lately that they’re seeing each other on the side, but who even knows if that is true? Most people were hoping that they would continue to spend time together on the show and get back together, but Somerhalder just married actress Nikki Reed, and Dobrev just announced she’s not returning to the Vampire Diaries next season. So there goes any hope that these two will make it work and get back together at any time.
Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody
Do you remember The O.C.? It was only a favorite show of our growing up (even though I will admit with minimal shame that it did not air until long after I graduated from high school). It was such a good show for the first few seasons, anyway. And these two adorable little characters were just a match made in television show heaven, and the world rejoiced when they became a real life off-screen couple, as well. Of course, their relationship did not last and it just broke our hearts. They were together for three years before they ended their relationship. And it was difficult for the two to play onscreen lovers for another year until the show was cancelled after the fourth season. Now he’s married to Leighton Meester, and Bilson has welcomed a baby with her fiancé. So it seems that they’re doing all right in real life despite the fact that their relationship did not work out on or off-screen.
Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki
For the most part, these two main characters from The Big Bang Theory managed to keep their relationship off-screen totally quiet for a long time. Many people are completely unaware of the fact that they were together for two years. People were delighted when they were together onscreen and had no idea that they’d been together for years off-screen. And the good news here is that they’ve remained good friends. When Cuoco recently won an award for her role on the show and made her acceptance speech, she forgot to thank her new husband in her speech. When the cast won another award for the show, it was Galecki that point out that Cuoco forgot to thank her husband and decided he would thank him on her behalf, and everyone got a huge kick out of that one. So it seems like despite their relationship not working out, these two have become good enough friends to make things work no matter what. We do, however, wonder what her husband has to say about that one.
Leighton Meester and Sebastian Stan
These two were costars on Gossip Girl that were forced to continue working together long after their romance fizzled and they broke up. Fortunately for the two, they dated for two years while his character, Carter Baizen, was more regular. It wasn’t long after the two called it quits in real life that his character left for good and the world could focus on the fact that Blair and Chuck Bass clearly needed to get together so that we could enjoy this romance on our own.
